How Tata has built a car that costs less than a motorbike

Tata has launched the Nano as a family car for four or five people, but the company concedes that the Nano is no limousine, with its dimensions of 3.1 m long by 1.5 m wide and 1.6 m high. Once again, though, the compact dimensions help to keep costs down, as the smaller the vehicle is, the fewer materials are required for its construction. A small, lightweight car can also be fitted with a smaller, lighter engine. In the Nano's case, the 624.6 cc, 33 PS, 48 Nm twin-cylinder aluminium engine is mounted transversely under the rear seats, ahead of the rear axle line and mated directly with the four-speed transaxle.

No common components

Because the Nano was being designed to be such a low-budget car, all components had to be designed from scratch, with nothing carried over from Tata's other vehicles.

Business spotlight: Colonial Hardware

Jeff Allen, one of the new owners of Colonial Hardware, can tell you just what he liked so much about the South Knoxville store when he was a customer.

It was the way owners Roy and Gerry Garnett went out of their way to help customers get what they needed.

Like the way they would let Allen take a part or piece of hardware home to make sure it fit, then come back and pay for it.

"Or, if I didn't know which one I needed, they'd put both on my ticket and let me bring back the one I didn't use," he said.

So when he and his wife, Sooky Allen, bought the store in December, he knew that's the way things were going to have to stay.

Colonial Hardware, on Chapman Highway behind Kay's Ice Cream store, has been a South Knoxville fixture since 1978, when the Garnetts opened it.

Ridges, soffits can effectively draw air

Q: I need help making a decision. We own a 30-year-old house with a low-pitch roof. We replaced the roof about four years ago, added a ridge vent and put an extra soffit vent between each original soffit vent. Other than the ridge vent and the gable vents, there is not another venting system.

My question is (and I hope that I can explain it easily) — would more air be drawn up through the soffit vents to the ridge vent if the gable vents were closed off? It seems that the majority of the air being pulled through the ridge vent would be from the gable vents, since the ridge vent is higher. I hope this makes sense.

Older Belligerent Men

If John McCain wins the nomination, he'll do so on the backs of older belligerent men.

What is this new swing voter bloc? It's something I've teased out from exit polls and anecdotal observations. It helps explain why McCain has decent enough conservative appeal to keep racking up pluralities in places like South Carolina and Florida.

First, the exit polls. McCain does best with older voters. He does better with men than women. He wins military veterans and those who believe the war in Iraq is the most important issue. None of this should be surprising. All of these qualities apply to McCain personally.

But there is something more raw and instinctual at work here too. Older belligerent men are not afraid of confrontation, either personally or politically. I've heard more than one guy mention McCain's volcanic temper as a positive.
