| PUBLIC AFFAIRS: What's up at UWI? Graduate students cite inadequate ...
In the Caribbean, the University of the West Indies (UWI) has regarded itself as the leading institution in the area of research. The university brags about its numerous publications in top international journals and research relevant to our West Indian and wider global societies. At the UWI Mona campus, the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences houses the most research students. Research from within that faculty has impacted the Caribbean and the world. Areas of research include medicine, bauxite, agriculture, food-processing industries, disaster management, crucial geological data and theories, atmospheric physics, notably global warming. Some of us can recall the issue of the salt that we export to Guyana becoming discoloured before arrival, ackee research, sickle cell, etc. The faculty has also produced many scholars in the areas of inorganic-reaction mechanisms, catalysis, organic synthesis, polymers, natural products, carbohydrate chemistry, climate-impact studies, Caribbean tectonics (geology), and Mona geographic information systems (GIS).
New Altima coupe looks like a winner
For years, Toyota and Honda have offered alternatives for those seeking a car as well-designed and well-built as a Camry or Accord sedan but with more sportiness and more expressive styling: the Camry and Accord coupes. This summer Nissan followed suit; for buyers who like Nissans and like the Altima sedan but want something that looks less common -- sportier -- than a sedan, there's now an Altima coupe. Leaving aside the inherent impracticalities of a coupe's long doors and cramped rear seat, the Altima looks like a winner. .
Miley Cyrus: 'I'm lonely'
The 15-year-old Hannah Montana star claims she is lonely, because father Billy Ray and mother Tish have banned her from spending time with many of her friends. She says, "Some people think you have more privileges than other teenagers because of what you do. And that's not it at all. It's actually the opposite." "They're protective for sure. My mom is more strict than my dad." "You want to keep your closed circle of friends. And sometimes my mom is saying, 'I have a bad vibe about this person. She needs to hang out with you when I'm around just to keep you safe.' "I need more friends. Its kind of like my quest right now just to have more true friends." Tension lingers at Marble Rock Council session
But Merfeld later drew up a second agenda and hand-delivered it to council members Sunday in addition to posting it at City Hall. That agenda included some of the same items that were on the first agenda but did not include appointment of a city attorney as the first agenda did.At the beginning of the meeting, Merfeld read a statement to the council."I will not consider any appointment for city attorney until all of the members of the City Council and the citizens of Marble Rock have been fully informed concerning the possible appointees, such as hourly fees, travel expense, availability for meetings, retainer fees, experience and more," he said.Merfeld also said he was not going to ask for approval of the agenda for that night but proceed directly into the meeting."There will be no prior comments allowed by any of the members of the City Council as they will more than likely result in the city’s urgent business not being addressed," he said."You can’t just sit there on your bully pulpit and dictate to us," Handley said.Engelhardt, Wells and Handley voted to approve the first agenda that was posted.
