Giving orang asli youth skills training

TANGKAK: The Johor Education Foundation (YPJ) has launched an aggressive move to attract as many orang asli youth to take up skills training courses next month.

A team, led by Muar and Batu Pahat community college chairman Abdullah Omar, has started making visits and giving talks to a community of Temuan orang asli near Gunung Ledang.

Abdullah said the programme was aimed at providing work skills to orang asli youth who did not have proper education to help them improve themselves.

"The community colleges in Johor have been providing work skills such as electrical wiring, air-conditioning repair, sewing and even tailoring to youth for several years.

"However, we now want to push the programme to the orang asli youth," he said in Kampung Tanah Gembur on Thursday.

Abdullah said the settlement, headed by Tuk Batin Jengking Jani, had about 66 families living in 52 homes located at the foothill of Gunung Ledang near Bekok.

He said initial checks with the community showed many of the youth either worked as contract labourers with daily wages or were self-employed.

He said the community of about 300 residents who owned cars or motorcycles and mostly lived in homes powered by generators could benefit if there was a certified electrical wireman or mechanic among them.

He said besides installing or repairing electrical wires, those with motor mechanical knowledge could repair vehicles while the girls could become tailors and sew dresses.

The C-J's Sunday College Basketball Notebook

The 6-foot-8 Stewart played 21 minutes in UK's 93-52 loss at Vanderbilt last week, more than he'd played in the previous 11 games combined. Five times during that 11-game span, Stewart didn't play at all.

But coach Billy Gillispie said Stewart is improving in practice, and though Stewart had as many turnovers (three) as points in the Vandy game, Gillispie said the freshman "played all right."

Stewart tied his career high with six rebounds against the Commodores.

"He's just growing up a little bit, becoming a guy that's in the February month of his freshman year," Gillispie said. "He's understanding how important it is to be in the right spot and playing from those spots and competing all the time."

Much to the chagrin of some UK fans -- who like Stewart's athleticism and see him as a potential contributor -- that doesn't mean Gillispie is making any promises about Stewart's playing time.

Innocent Families Discover Meth Still Lurks In Their Homes - Part III

We first alerted homeowners to a problem that has lurked inside their homes for years. Houses that used to be meth labs are now home sweet home to unsuspecting families.

We're testing the smallest places, looking for a drug that could coat every inch of a home, without the owner ever knowing about the dangers. Pascagoula resident Lila West is convinced Hurricane Katrina washed her home's meth problem away.

When WLOX reporter Keli Rabon asked West if she thought her home was safe, she assured us she was safe. West said before Katrina, she and her family worked hard to clean it up.

"All I know is this was the nastiest, filthiest hole I've ever seen in my life. We had every window open, we took all the rugs out and mopped them down with vinegar and water," West said.

Reshaped Braves aim toward spring training

Talked to Hoss for a while at FanFest, and he said he feels great and added some muscle, still at about 227-228 pounds but fitter, after an offseason of lifting weights in workouts at his Atlanta home and Texas farm. He began hitting and throwing last week.

When I asked him about the vibe at FanFest, Jones said: "Lot of people are excited about Tommy coming back, and a lot are bummed because Andruw's not coming back. But overall, everybody can't wait to get to spring training — that's what I hear."

And what did he think of the teams' moves this winter?

"The good thing about this organization during the offseason is, you feel like they're always going to give you the opportunity to be competitive," he said. "We're going to be competitive. You never know how things are going to work out.

From Heavy Metal to the Hajj

It seems you have entered a particularly productive phase in your career.Paul DiAnno: I just had a month off and it was the first month off from work in four years. After the second week of it I wanted to kill everybody, so it was back to work for me! [laughs] We are going back to Russia at the end of the month and that is going to be pretty nuts.

Since we last spoke there has been a biography out with your life storyNo, I’m not quite dead yet! I have a few more bits to get on with yet, but I have changed my lifestyle so much now that it is nowhere near as bad as it was in the book.

I only agreed to do [the book] because all of the proceeds go to a cancer charity that I sponsor.

Have you lost someone to cancer?Yes, several actually. My Nana died of cancer, then my keyboard player in Battlezone, Attila, we lost him three years ago, and that is what made me decide to have a go at doing something about it.

Scotland's best: Bannockburn, Bond or Baxter?

It depends where you shop. In my experience, I always find Saltires...I don't mind. I like to know the food I'm buying is local, and it would be the same if there was a Union Jack on it.

I am proud of my Scottish heritage but I'm proud to be British too.
